Children's Privacy Notice
For parents, in one paragraph. Children never create their own Oikos Connect accounts — a child exists in the app only because you created their profile inside your family. We collect the minimum needed for chores, calendar, and family features; we show children no ads, we never sell their information, we build no profiles of them, and anything child-directed that reaches beyond your household — messaging, AI — is off unless you turn it on. You can see, correct, or delete everything about your child at any time.
This notice explains how Oikos Connect handles personal information relating to children under 13 (and, where local law sets a higher age of digital consent, children under that age). It is designed to comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and is part of our Privacy Policy.
1. Parental consent — how it works here
Oikos Connect has no child sign-up flow. There is no form a child can fill in, no age gate for them to bluff past. Instead:
- An adult account owner (18+) creates a family and adds a child profile from inside their own authenticated account.
- Creating a child profile is our mechanism for verifiable parental consent: the profile can only be created by the signed-in parent or guardian, who confirms in the flow that they are the child's parent or legal guardian and consents to the limited collection described below. Where the family has made a purchase, the payment card on file provides additional verification.
- Consent is revocable at any time: delete the child's profile and further collection stops (see Section 6).
- If we learn that personal information about a child was submitted to us without parental consent, we delete it.
2. Exactly what we collect about a child, and why
| Data | Why we collect it | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Display name (often just a first name or nickname) | So the child appears on the family's calendar, chore chart, and lists | Yes — but a real or full name is never required; "Bug" works fine |
| Avatar color, or an optional photo the parent uploads | To tell family members apart at a glance | Color yes; photo optional and parent-supplied |
| Chore & activity records (assignments, completions, the "actually done" altruism record, rewards/points, goals) | The core chores/goals features | Created through normal family use |
| Faith entries (prayer, gratitude, devotional activity) if the parent enables those features for the child | The family faith features | Optional — parent-controlled |
| Device data when a child uses a shared family device (app version, error diagnostics) | To keep the app working and secure | Operational only; never used for tracking or profiling |
We do not ask children for — and the app has no place for a child to enter — email addresses, phone numbers, precise location, or government identifiers. We do not condition a child's participation on disclosing more information than is reasonably necessary.
3. Our pledge: what we never do with a child's data
- No advertising. Children see no ads in Oikos Connect — no one does, because we don't run ads.
- No selling or renting. We never sell, rent, or trade a child's personal information. Full stop.
- No profiling. We build no behavioral profiles of children and use no cross-site tracking, analytics SDKs, or advertising identifiers in child-facing surfaces.
- No AI training. Children's content is never used to train AI models — ours or anyone else's.
- Scoped to the family. A child's data lives inside your family's scope by default and does not travel beyond it without a deliberate parental action.
4. Child-directed features are off by default
- Messaging: children have no direct messages outside the family. Any cross-family or group communication for a child profile is off unless a parent deliberately enables it, and — where offered — remains visible to parents.
- AI features: disabled for child profiles by default. A parent may enable specific AI features for a child; even then, the child's content is processed only for that action and never retained for training (see the AI section of our Privacy Policy).
- Sharing scopes: a child's items default to the Family scope. Parents control whether anything a child creates can be shared to a wider circle (Oikos, Group, or Church).
5. When child data is shared with anyone
We share children's personal information only with the small set of service providers that run the app itself (database hosting, sync, notifications) — under contract, only to operate the service — and where required by law or necessary to protect the safety of a child. Never for marketing, advertising, or any third party's own use.
6. Parents' rights and controls
As the parent or guardian, you can at any time:
- Review everything collected about your child — it is all visible in the app, in your family's spaces.
- Correct your child's profile and content.
- Delete your child's profile (Settings → Family → the child's profile → Remove), which deletes the child's personal information and stops further collection, or delete the whole family account.
- Refuse further collection without deleting history, by pausing the child's participation in specific features.
- Ask us directly: email [email protected] with the subject "Child data request." We verify that the requester is the child's parent/guardian on the family account, then act promptly — deletion requests are honored within 14 days.
We will never penalize or degrade your family's service for exercising these rights.
7. Changes to this notice
If we materially change how we collect or use children's personal information, we will notify parents in the app and by email and obtain fresh parental consent where COPPA requires it before the change applies to your child.
